About Kipepeo Butterfly Farm
Kipepeo Butterfly Farm is a community conservation enterprise at the edge of Arabuko-Sokoke Forest Reserve near Gede, 120 km from Mombasa Airport. The project — the first of its kind in Africa — employs forest-edge community members to rear indigenous butterfly species from eggs collected in the forest, providing a livelihood that directly incentivises forest protection. The breeding enclosures contain butterfly species endemic to the East African coastal forests — including the Sokoke charaxes and the forest queen — that exist nowhere outside Arabuko-Sokoke and its immediate surroundings. The farm also functions as a research station studying coastal forest butterfly life cycles. A guided walk through the emergence cages combines natural history explanation with direct butterfly handling. The Arabuko-Sokoke forest trailhead is a 3-minute walk from the farm entrance.
Kipepeo is 3 km from the Gede Ruins — the two sites are routinely combined in a half-day Watamu-area itinerary.
