About Gede Ruins

Gede is a medieval Swahili-Arab coastal town abandoned in the 17th century, preserved in dense indigenous forest 5 km inland from Watamu, 120 km from Mombasa Airport. The National Museum of Kenya site encompasses a sultan’s palace, eight mosques, 14 large houses, a water distribution system, and a network of residential lanes. The town is believed to have had a population of 2,500–3,000 at its 14th–15th century peak.

The ruins are partially absorbed by the forest that has grown over them since abandonment — massive fig trees have fractured mosque walls, colobus monkeys move through the gallery forest above the palace, and yellow-rumped tinkerbirds call from the undergrowth between house foundations. The combination of intact Swahili architecture and encroaching forest makes Gede visually unlike any other archaeological site on the coast. The Nyari House and House of the Scissors are the best-preserved structures.

Gede is typically visited in combination with Kipepeo Butterfly Farm (3 km) and the Arabuko-Sokoke Forest trailhead (2 km). Morning visits before 10:00 offer the best light for photography and the quietest atmosphere. CoastLine often routes guests via Gede on the way to a Watamu beach hotel — the ruins are 10 minutes off the B8, adding only 20–30 minutes to the transfer.
