About Fort Jesus Museum
Fort Jesus is a Portuguese military fortification built in 1593 on the edge of Mombasa Old Town’s harbour entrance, 30 km from Mombasa Airport via the Makupa Causeway. UNESCO designated it a World Heritage Site in 2011. The fort was designed by Giovanni Battista Cairati to a human-plan — one of the few examples of Italian military architecture built in Africa. Its walls, up to 2.5 metres thick, withstood 17 sieges over four centuries.
Inside the fort, the Mombasa Museum documents the layers of Portuguese, Omani, and British occupation — naval artefacts, Omani ceramics, and colonial records displayed in rooms with original vaulted ceilings. The San Felipe bastion provides an unobstructed view across the Old Harbour to the dhow anchorage. The fort’s moat is now a garden, and evening cultural events are held periodically on the main parade ground.
Fort Jesus sits on Nkrumah Road in the heart of Mombasa Old Town — a 5-minute walk from the Buxton Ferry jetty and within walking distance of Old Town’s carved-door architecture and Swahili street food. CoastLine recommends combining a morning fort visit with an Old Town walking tour and seafood lunch on the harbour before the return transfer.
What to See & Do
The Mombasa Museum inside the fort walls, the San Felipe bastion ocean viewpoint, the Portuguese-era well, Omani House restoration, Old Town carved-door walking circuit (5 min walk), dhow watching from the harbour wall, and the fort’s baobab-shaded moat garden.
