About Mwaluganje Elephant Sanctuary

Mwaluganje Elephant Sanctuary was established in 1995 as a community-run conservation area in Kwale County, 70 km from Mombasa Airport. It covers 35 sq km of steep, rocky terrain and riparian forest along the Mwachema River catchment — created to protect a critical elephant corridor between Shimba Hills and the wider Tsavo ecosystem.

The sanctuary supports a resident population of around 200 elephants and is one of the few places near Mombasa where close-range elephant encounters are virtually guaranteed. The terrain is rugged — dramatic ridges and river valleys cut through dense elephant grass — which keeps visitor numbers low and makes sightings feel genuinely wild. Vervet monkeys, baboons, and antelope share the space alongside exceptional riparian birdlife.

The rough track into the sanctuary requires a 4×4 — a saloon will ground out on the ridgeline approaches during or after rain. CoastLine recommends Mwaluganje for guests willing to accept a more adventurous transfer in exchange for a more intimate wildlife encounter than the large national parks offer. Often combined with Shimba Hills on the same day.

What to See & Do at Mwaluganje Elephant Sanctuary

Close-range elephant encounters (resident population ~200), guided walks through riparian forest, rocky ridge viewpoints over the Kwale escarpment, excellent birdwatching along the Mwachema River, and colobus monkey in the forest canopy.
